The Palisades near the NY border - Courtesy of Steve T.
Today's Hoboken Journal Photo of the Day from reader Steve T. is not from Hoboken but is of an extensive geographical feature that can bee seen in Hoboken and extends for many miles northward towards the New York State border.
The "The_Palisades" are a line of steep cliffs along the west side of the lower Hudson River in northeast New Jersey and southern New York in the United States. The cliffs stretch north from Jersey City approximately 20 miles to near Nyack, New York. The cliffs are the margin of a diabase sill, formed approximately 200 million years ago at the close of the Triassic Period from volcanic activity.
Blockbuster Movie Idea: Shoot a disaster movie in Hoboken where the vulcanism that has been dormant for over 200 million years suddenly becomes active again. This would make our flooding problems in Hoboken quite the trivial concern in comparison. Imagine City Hall, which can sometimes be be fiery enough without nature's help covered in lava. Better yet, City Hall conducts a lottery supervised by City Clerk Jimmy Farina where the few lucky citizens who win are granted shelter in our very own Sybill's cave. The fix would be in because you know Dave Roberts would somehow get one of the spots given his own personal contributions (as well as the taxpayers). And here you thought the possibility of the HUMC shutting down was going to be Hoboken's Armageddon!
Quick! Call James Cameron, Steven Spielberg; a blockbuster film is awaiting the citizens of Hoboken to get their 15 minutes of fame as extras that meet a fiery death. Oops, too late, our very own 30 day former Mayor "Malibu Pete" Cammarano has already grabbed the limelight. :) ◦
