Dawn Zimmer's Press release:
STATEMENT OF DAWN ZIMMER IN RESPONSE
TO LAY-OFFS IN FIRE DEPARTMENT
“The fiscal irresponsibility of the last 16 years has unfortunately made these kind of tough choices necessary. I commend State Fiscal Monitor Tripodi for taking decisive action aimed at putting our fiscal house in order.
I call on Ms. Tripodi to release the operational audits of the Fire and Police departments, which served as the basis for this decision. Public Safety is a top priority and it is important that we confirm that these lay-offs can go forward without jeopardizing public safety.
Having seen our fire fighters in action, I admire their courage and professionalism. The need for budget cuts in no way detracts from their service and hard work
I urge Ms. Tripodi once again to implement furlough days as a way to make further reductions in payroll costs, while sharing the sacrifice city employees must make more broadly.
As we enter into union negotiations, reducing payroll costs across the board can minimize the need for future lay-offs I urge the unions representing city employees keep this hard fact in mind”.
