City Council Recap - from May 18

The City Council Agenda was very light last night at City Hall. The 4th Graders from All Saints Episcopal School read a presentation on Litter in Hoboken. About a dozen students read sections from the report published below on SlideShare:

There was an ordinance on the agenda for first reading whose key component modified outdoor cafe seating end times from 11:00PM to 10:30PM Monday through Thursday. It also cleaned up some language from various amendments according to Gary Holtzman who spoke to me before its planned introduction. Some 30 or so bar owners were present at the meeting to give their remarks against the ordinance but it was tabled to The Quality of Life Subcommittee. The bar owners promptly left afterwards. This ordinance was sponsored by Beth Mason and Theresa Castellano. Here is a copy in Slideshare:

There were ordinances for Redevelopment that are still tabled due to the fact that they need to be reviewed by the Planning Board.

Beth Mason - "Reports of her demise are greatly exaggerated"

In the new business section of the meeting Beth Mason held her chin high and pointed out to the audience and particularly Tim Caroll of the Hoboken Reporter, that "reports of her demise were greatly exaggerated". Her remarks were well received and even got a round of applause from the members in the audience. She stated that she plans to continue servicing her Ward and Hoboken at large in her position as Council woman.

There were several public speakers and I am not including all here but here are the highlights:

- Scott Siegel spoke on the City Audit.
- Perry Belfiore spoke about the need for Open Space in the City Garage Redevelopment Zone as well as the fact that the PILOTS were poorly constructed. Jim Doyle had remarked to Perry welcoming him to the cause for open space in a somewhat ironic or sarcastic tone afterwards.
- Jim Doyle spoke on the recent developments regarading SW park and one owner's plans to expand his restaurant to 2 stories as being a wakeup call to aquire the park lans soon before it is too late.
- Tony Soares also spoke about the SouthWest park and that the restaurant should not be a central concern in his opinion since there is other land that should be aquired first that is more integral to the big picture.
- This part I missed since I had stepped out of the room but it was reported by some that City Council Candidate Patricia Waiters spoke against what she perceived to be racism by Hoboken Revolt and the Hoboken Reporter for not publishing her submisisons. I have received emails from Hoboken Revolt and that organization denies the allegations made as unfounded. ◦
