Happy Columbus Day!

Today is Christopher Columbus Day which has been a Federal Holiday since 1934. Not all states celebrate this occasion but the state New Jersey does so those who are employed by our beloved State of NJ get the day off.

The place where I work does not have the day off anymore so am I at work. I can say that there were much fewer people commuting today than normal. The plus side of going to work on a day like this is that the commute is not crowded and it reminds me that I am thankful to have a job in the economy. Some of my friends and acquaintances have not been as lucky.

Columbus Day is one holiday that isn't universally embraced by all however. Some people feel that there should not be a holiday celebrating a man whose "discovery" brought upon the darker side of humanity with a period of colonization. Whatever your feeling on the subject I am a proponent of working to live so any holiday that is out there whether I get the day off is good for a country that before the recession I considered to be overworked (except for State employees and multiple job holder and our Assemblyman Ruben Ramos- just kidding Ruben).
