Here is an interesting video from Rachel Maddow on the reaction to the Nobel Peace Prize. It mentions of course the Republican backlash on Obama winning the award too soon as well as some past winners who strived for peace but didn't always achieve the goal they were seeking.....

Original Story 10/9/2009:
An AP report coming out of Oslo is stating that Barack Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize. He is the third sitting American President to do so. Woodrow Wilson and Teddy Roosevelt are the other two.
The Nobel Committee lauded the change in global mood wrought by Obama's calls for peace and cooperation but recognized initiatives that have yet to bear fruit: reducing the world stock of nuclear arms, easing American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthening the U.S. role in combating climate change.
"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," Thorbjoern Jagland (Committee Chairman) said.

Topics for discussion:
Is this too soon or has Barack Obama done a lot to change the tone internationally? I think almost everyone could agree that there is much to be done still to improve the world political situation. I would like to see this improving climate lead to long term gains that would justify the honor bestowed upon our President. In the meantime, I am happy that the United States is viewed by the world in a more positive light. Maybe it is time for me to update my passport and do some travelling. Feel free to comment below.
