Jake Stuiver Sponsors MLK Day Essay Contest for Connor's School Kids
“Making a Difference” Theme on Service Inspired By Dr. King’s Legacy
HOBOKEN -- Housing Authority Commissioner Jake Stuiver is sponsoring a Martin Luther King Day essay contest for students at Connors School, asking them to write about how Dr. King’s legacy inspires them to serve their communities and make a difference in the world.
Working with faculty at Connors, which serves many young people from the Housing Authority community, Stuiver is asking students to submit 200-word essays with the theme “Making a Difference,” and to reflect on what Dr. King’s legacy means to them personally and write about how it inspires them to take active roles in the community.
Essays are due at the end of the day Tuesday, Jan. 19, the day after Martin Luther King Day. Stuiver has asked Connors faculty to narrow submissions down to a few finalists, and he will work with them to select two winners on Thursday, Jan. 21. Each will receive a $50 gift card, one to Game Stop and another to Target.
The contest is meant to encourage students to reflect on the holiday weekend and think about how to keep Dr. King’s ideas in motion today, as well as to express themselves creatively, with a fun incentive and a friendly competition.
Each winner will also receive a book purchased from the Hoboken Historical Museum.
