Hoboken School New Jersey State Aid cut by $669,521 for 2009-2010

Governor Christie per executive edict has cut Hoboken School Aid by $669,521 for the Fiscal School Year of 2009-2010 with only less than 5 months to go. It is anticipated these cuts will also apply to the 2010-2011 budget.

Last week, a preliminary outline of the 2010-2011 Hoboken School Budget was distributed at the BOE meeting and stated the assumption that State Aid Funding will be flat. Now we know it will be reduced by $669,521. Thus, in order to keep the tax levey at least flat the Hoboken Schools Administration will have to make at almost $700,000 in cuts this year and next year.

Below is the 2010-2011 Budget Outline for Hoboken Schools and the information on Chris Christie's executive order mandating cuts in New Jersey state aid to schools.....

State Aid Freeze: 2010

On February 11, 2010, Gov. Chris Christie signed Executive Order 14 declaring a fiscal emergency in New Jersey. The order came in response to a deficit in the current-year budget. A significant portion of the effort to close the budget gap involves withholding state aid payments to some 500 school districts based on the amount of their excess surplus and certain reserve accounts.

To help local boards of education address this issue in their communities, next week’s School Board Notes will include a fact sheet about the governor’s action and its impact on school districts.
