City Councilman Mike Lenz on the Municipal Garage Bond

Here is an excerpt from Mike Lenz's latest position and argument in favor of the Municipal Garage Bond being passed from his new City Council Website:

If not there, where? If not now, when?

For a meeting at which no action was taken, last Sunday's council meeting had a lot of agreement. Pretty much without exception all the speakers and council members seemed to agree:

  •  The garage should not be moved to a residential neighborhood.
  • The process of planning for relocation has been botched from day one -- five years ago.
  • At this point we have zero good options.
  • This bond ordinance could ONLY be used to keep the garage where it is now -- not a great option, but one we'd be very happy to have if the buyer is unable to close.
  • It is unthinkable and irresponsible for the City to default on its $15+ million balloon payment coming up on July 1 -- 17 days away and counting.
  • We need to refinance at a reasonable rate of interest.
  • The City needs all the alternatives it can muster.

But of course there was some disagreement, leaving the council one vote short of the six needed to move forward.

Editor's Note: The bond for the Municipal Garage will come up again tomorrow night at the City Council meeting. Will common sense finally prevail and the politics of posturing be put aside for the betterment of the City? We will see. The Hoboken Journal will be live blogging this meeting.
