Zimmer's Campaign Manager Calls for a City Council Debate

Here is a press release from Dawn Zimmer's Campaign manager Sam Briggs who is calling for a city Council Debate amongst the remaining six candidates vying for three positions:

ZIMMER CAMPAIGN'S RESPONSE TO CAMMARANO'S ATTEMPT TO EXPLAIN AWAY HIS COUNCIL SLATE DUCKING DEBATES

" We have already had two Mayoral debates in the run-off (Hoboken Reporter and POG) and Dawn and Peter are appearing together at a Cablevision Debate and another forum this week. This is on top of three Mayoral debates during the first round. It is now time for a Council debate. Dawn Zimmer's slate represents real change and Peter Cammarano's slate is tied to the failed politics and policies of the past 16 years. Like Peter Cammarano they stand for continuing the Roberts' approach of reckless spending and large-scale development. which will leave the rest of us footing an even bigger tax bill. Maybe that's why Peter Cammarano has decided to hide his slate from Hoboken voters."

Endorsement Tracker on NJ.com

Here is the recent list of endorsements from the two remaining candidates for those who are influenced by these events. Peter Cammarano had a a good week last week picking up endorsements from the status quo for the most part. Chris Carbine was the one surprise given his fiscal conservative stance on issues but there are always other factors in decisions that are made.

More on the Anti Zimmer Fliers

Here is a follow up on the Anti Zimmer fliers mailed out over the weekend. This comes from an anonymous source that I know is credible in terms of fact gathering. Here is a little more behind the Building America Committee from my anonymous source's perspective. I find some of the counclusions that are reached to be very speculative in nature but here goes:

Building America Committee is described on its IRS filing as being “committed to building progressive infrastructure at federal, state, and local levels through issue advocacy and citizen outreach.” The committee was created just two weeks ago (May 19) by this fellow:

That’s Keith Carbone, a political worker/strategist from New Milford currently residing in Florida. He’s worked on the Obama campaign in Iowa and a council campaign in Washington, DC. He’s also worked for the BCDO – Bergen County’s version of the Hudson County Democratic Organization – and as a Bergen county canvass director for Robert Menendez for US Senate. Among his friends on Facebook is Scott Shields of White Horse Strategies, the political strategy/communications group used by Cammarano’s campaign.

Who’s paying for these mailers? Two from Building America Committee and two mailers before that from Citizens for the Future, another Washington DC PAC fronting for a political strategy firm. Cammarano is most likely skirting campaign contribution limits, evading pay-to-play laws, or hiding his benefactors from public view – or some combination of the three.

My comment: The last sentence is the opinion of my anonymous source. Of course the 4th option would be that Peter Cammarano's team has no knowledge of this group and that may very well be what his team will state. If that is so, it still must be pointed out that those two mailers were not cheap and it thus implies that some big money interests are in indeed backing Peter Cammarano either directly or indirectly. Why such interest from afar in a local election? One word: Development. Just my hypothesis.

New Political Website - RealCammarano.com

Here is a video from a new website www.realcammarano.com that shows a few highlights from the Mayoral Debate on May 28th and follows it up with some fact checking. This website does not go into personal attacks but just focuses on Peter's voting record and his statements or mistatements about his record and that of Dawn Zimmer.

Do consider this an opinion blog but feel free to comment below on the accuracy of the research that is on that site.

Mayoral Art Community Forum June 4th at 4PM

Here is an upcoming event this Thursday June 4th that has both candidates for Mayor, Peter Cammarano and Dawn Zimmer discussing the artistic Community for 15 minutes each with a Q&A session to follow.

Arts, Culture, and Community Forum
at Monroe Theatrespace

Arts, Culture, and Community Forum with Hoboken mayoral candidates Peter Cammarano and Dawn Zimmer in The Monroe Theatrespace, June 4 @ 4pm.

Candidates Cammarano and Zimmer will be presenting their opinions and ideas on the importance of a healthy community of artists and creative entrepreneurs within the community of Hoboken. Each candidate will speak for fifteen minutes followed by fifteen minutes each for questions and answers.

We are hoping that everyone from the community who shares our concern for the future of the arts, music and culture will attend. We are counting on a strong turn out from the community to impress upon these candidates that cultural production is a vital part of the fabric of our lives here in Hoboken.

The event will take place in the The Monroe Theatrespace, 720 Monroe Street, on the second floor, on Thursday, June 4 @ 4pm and is hosted by The Friends of the Monroe Center.

Letter to the Editor - Anti Zimmer Flier

Here is a letter to the editor regarding recent Anti-Dawn Zimmer fliers sent in the mail from a new group called "Building America Committee". These attack ads I believe are designed to obscure Peter Cammarano's complicity in the as-is passing of four years of Dave Roberts budget as well as suppress voter turnout in my humble opinion. Here is an email from Laura Keating, Hoboken Resident:

This weekend contained mailbox stuffers from Dawn, from Peter--but also from "Building America Committee". Since few people read the "paid for" ads, I think someone needs to highlight this backdoor contribution to Cammarano. Who is the "Building America Committee"? Presumably people who wouldn't help Peter with public support, don't want to appear in ELEC reports, and don't want to observe ELEC limits. And call themselves "Building America", which sure sounds like the development community to me.

As for the charge that Dawn Zimmer caused the tax hike, this is presumably traced to the nonsense that by failing to vote for an illegal, underfunded budget, the council triggered state takeover and thus the tax hike. And who knows, perhaps we could have continued borrowing for another year or two before finances came crashing down--definitely a developer mind set, where if you can just survive, you can get rich. But not a good plan for city finances.

- Laura Keating
Hoboken Resident

For reference, here is the flier that was in this week's mailboxes. There were a total of two and given the print quality and reach probably were around the $50,000 mark in terms of cost:
