Letter to the Editor - Cammarano should resign

Letter to the Editor - Cammarano Should Resign

Hoboken Journal Reader Lincolnlogger had this to say about the arrest of Peter Cammarano this week on FBI corruption charges. Here is his letter/email:

Dear Hoboken Residents,

Our newly elected mayor has brought shame to our town and to himself. Those that voted for him (not me) placed trust in him to do the job well, without corruption or other methods of self-service. Those that voted and campaigned against him feared that he would do exactly what he is charged of doing by the FBI, i.e. taking bribes from developers in return for "favors".

The mayor is now in a position where he is less than a month into his position, and no one can ever trust him to do his job effectively. While he is busy preparing his defense against the Feds, he will be also fighting for what little control this town can't take away from him. He'll be facing an uphill battle with a major distraction (namely trying to avoid jail) clouding his every judgement, his every move.

With these facts in mind, there is no way he can be an effective mayor. If he is convicted, everything he does in office will have to be undone. Even if he isn't convicted, he still leaves a tarnished legacy that should be preemptively shortened.

He is protesting "innocent until proven guilty", which is hypocrisy in the face of his "Zero tolerance" remarks of only last week regarding Hector Claveria's pending bribery charges. Cammarano called for his immediate resignation, and no one can offer up a more convincing argument for Cammarano himself to resign. Apparently he lives by the "do as I say, not as I do" philosophy of life.

Your call to action as residents of Hoboken is to let everyone know that Cammarano should resign. You can do this several ways:

1) Call City Hall and let them know how you feel. They will take messages, but please be nice to the person answering the phones. It's not their fault. Phone number is 201-420-2013.

2) Use Facebook, Myspace, blogs, anything on the Web. There are several websites dedicated to Hoboken (some of higher quality than others). Register and post comments. You can message Peter directly on Facebook, or post on the "peter Cammarano for Hoboken" group page. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=45005903114

3) Wear your Vote Zimmer shirts around town if you have one. Let people know you didn't vote for a crook.

4) Attend City Council meetings. The dates, times, and locations are posted on the city's website in advance.

5) Be involved, be aware, and be vocal. And when it is time, be sure to cast your vote in the special election that is bound to take place to replace our corrupt mayor.

Thanks,

Peter Cammarano Resignation Poll

Polls are a nice way to have you, the online readers participate a a little more than just passively reading. There has been a lot of talk about whether or not Peter Cammarano should resign over the corruption charges handed down yesterday by the Feds. Here is a poll where you can voice your opinion. I didn't just give the reader yes or no options but wanted to differentiate the yeahs and nays a litle more. Hopefully, I have the main choices covered.

Political Cartoon - Yesterday's Events

I may be able to write a bit but one thing is for sure, I can't draw. Here is the first drawn political cartoon featured on this website displaying the artwork of local artist Ricardo "Ricky" Roig. He works as a waiter in town and I have always been impressed with his ability to do quick sketches. With all the perps potential and actual that we have in this town I am sure his skills could be needed some day to help fight crime. :)

In the meantime here is the first of what could be many political cartoons on Hoboken. I will publish more information on this artist but most of you perhaps know the song "Ricky don't lose that number"..... Well I lost Ricky's number. :)

At least I found him on Facebook:

http://www.facebook.com/people/Ricardo-Roig/828840115#/profile.php?id=828840115

Anyway, I asked Ricky to take less than 10 minutes to sketch something about Peter Cammarano and the Monopoly theme including The GO TO JAIL CARD. That was the limit of my art direction and to the left is the result....

Cammarano arrested as a result of FBI Probe

I was planning on staying on blogger vacation this Summer but events from this morning reporting Peter Cammarano's arrest from an FBI investigation now have me blogging again. At least for a little while.

Here are some recent links that cover the action:

In case you were wondering what my take on the soon to be anally violated Peter Cammarano et al scandal of some of New Jersey’s finest Sopranos, well here goes:

1) I had decided to put my blog on vacation this summer and stay away from the politics. Of course I did watch some of the Council meeting on NJ.com's Hoboken Now Website and what a show some of the speakers put on. Thanks to Carly for her efforts in informing the Public without a hidden agenda.

2) This vacation has had positive health benefits, My blood pressure is down, I now drink in moderation, but the eating (well that is another story).

3) Thanks to Peter for interrupting my vacation plans from the blog.

4) Now to the topic. No, I did not vote for this guy because I couldn't trust him.

5) He lied about his out of wedlock child that he had at 18 years old (personally I don't care about it other than the fact he lied when the story broke), he talked out of both side of his mouth, he was condescending to me even when I tried to politely reason with him on my choice, and he lied about his voting record and his opponents during the campaign for Mayor but what politician doesn’t? Answer- Dawn Zimmer. You might not like her as Council Prez. but at least she isn't corrupt.

6) I always suspected some skulduggery, malfeasance, patronage and pandering from this guy but outright corruption on this scale, never in a million years. I am still in shock.

7) To all those so-called reformers who voted for this guy thinking he was going to do the right thing.... I TOLD YOU SO, I TOLD YOU SO, etc.

8) I do believe in innocent before guilty but I suggest you read the complaint and judge for yourself. Pages 4 and on show this arrogant jerk's true colors and sniggering contempt for the electorate.

Here is the link to the FBI criminal complaint.

9) Peter Cammarano’s career as Politician and Mayor is most likely toast regardless of whether or not he is convicted.

10) Skulduggery and malfeasance always bring out the poet in me so here goes:

Cammarano Jail Haiku

Rising star now is distraught,

On Vacation

I have decided to take a break this Summer and focus on the possibility of reconstructing this website on a new and more robust platform. As a part time blogger I can't do both publishing current content, explore a new website architecture and maintain my career.

Expect me back sometime in the Fall if I am able to get the new site up and running.
There might be a few more articles on the web site during the summer but no where near the pace I was at.

I am overall happy about the development in Hoboken politics and look forward to what the new school board and City Council majorities can do to move the city forward. ◦

BOE Superintendent Jack Raslowsky Resigns - Goes to Xavier

XAVIER NAMES NEW PRESIDENT
HOBOKEN'S JACK RASLOWSKY
New York City Jesuit Secondary School,
Founded 162 Years Ago, Selects 33rd Leader

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Xavier High School, Richard T. Nolan, Jr., Esq., Class of 1983, announced that John R. Raslowsky II will assume the presidency of the school on July 1st, when Rev. Daniel J. Gatti, S.J. ’59 steps down after a twelve year tenure. Mr. Raslowsky’s selection was made, after a nearly two year search and upon the recommendation of the search committee, by Xavier’s Board of Trustees and was approved by its Board of Members and by the provincial of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus.

Newly elected President Jack Raslowsky with Chairman of the Board of Trustees Richard Nolan, Esq, ’83 (l.) and outgoing President Daniel J. Gatti ’59 (r.).

Mr. Raslowsky, an experienced educator and administrator, brings to Xavier exceptionally strong educational leadership skills and an over twenty-five year record of intensive involvement in Jesuit education. His association with the Society of Jesus has been extensive, beginning as a student at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City (1975-1979), then at St. Peter’s Prep as a teacher, moderator, coach, and principal (1985-2003), and finally as an assistant in the New York Provincial’s Office (2003-2007). His in-depth exposure to, understanding of, and commitment to the teachings of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, makes him an ideal selection as Xavier’s next president.

Over the past two years, Raslowsky has been the superintendent of schools in Hoboken, New Jersey, an educational system with 2,500 students at six schools. In this position, his focus and leadership has resulted in a reinvention of expectations for the district, as well as some remarkable progress. Under his leadership, the District’s high school was recognized for its dramatic improvement by New Jersey Monthly and the U.S. News and World Report.

Prior to that, he worked in various capacities in the office of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus, including serving as the Provincial’s Assistant for Pre-Secondary and Secondary Education, as well as his Assistant for Lay Faith Formation. In these positions, he had vital roles in addressing mission, clarifying identity issues, and ensuring effective governance. Raslowsky was the Provincial’s personal designee as a member on each board of the Province’s seven high schools and three province-sponsored middle schools.

John Raslowsky will be Xavier’s thirty-third president and the first layman to lead Xavier. While this may be a milestone, it is an event for which the Jesuits and their lay collaborators in this Province and in Jesuit education across the country have prepared for some time. Knowing that the Society was “graying” and that vocations were decreasing, Jesuit leadership throughout the nation over the past thirty years set forth on a mission to ignite the Ignatian flame among the Jesuit laity. Jack, as he is known, is one of those benefiting from these creative initiatives. He is among the authors of What Makes a Jesuit School Jesuit. He now joins the two other high school lay presidents in the New York Province and the ten lay presidents from the 52 Jesuit high schools throughout the country.

Mr. Raslowsky’s academic preparation includes an undergraduate degree in zoology from the University of Vermont and a master of education in administration from Harvard University. Next spring, he anticipates receiving a master’s degree in systematic theology from Seton Hall University’s Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology. He has supplemented these degree programs with coursework at Jersey City State College, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Columbia and Fordham Universities.

Mr. Raslowsky’s voluntary pursuits and interests include: current chair of the board of New York Nativity, the governing body of Nativity Mission Center, St. Ignatius School, and Brooklyn Jesuit Prep; a former volunteer with the Boy Scouts; a former coach of youth recreational basketball; and the interviewing of candidates for admission to two of his alma maters, Vermont and Harvard.

In his announcement, Richard T. Nolan, Jr., Esq. ’83 (the Chairman of the Xavier Board of Trustees – see paragraph one) stated that: "It is with great confidence and enthusiasm that the Board of Trustees welcomes Jack as Xavier's 33rd president. We are confident that he possesses the educational skill and experience, the understanding of and commitment to the charism of the Society of Jesus, and the authenticity of formation in Ignatian spirituality that the Board believes are essential in Xavier’s next president".

We see Jack’s educational leadership experience as impressively compelling. He's a proven leader of Jesuit educational institutions, with real world hands-on experience that ranges from teacher, retreat leader, moderator, and coach, to principal, trustee, board chairman, provincial’s assistant, and superintendent of schools. It is with strong conviction that we believe he is the leader Xavier needs to achieve even higher levels of performance and success as it seeks to prepare the young men of today and tomorrow for service to our country, our city, and our Catholic faith.

The provincial of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus, the V. Rev. David S. Ciancimino, S.J., a 1977 graduate of Xavier and a former headmaster at the school, in approving the selection, said: “Having worked with Jack, I am confident that he will serve the Society of Jesus and Xavier well.”

While Raslowsky’s work at Xavier will commence on July 1, the Xavier school community’s plans for him will include an Installation Ceremony and Mass on September 11, 2009, and at that time or shortly thereafter, a Welcoming Reception, that will permit members of the Xavier family of alumni, parents, and friends to personally meet and greet President Raslowsky and his family.
Jack Raslowsky resides in Hoboken with his wife, Sarah, who is a mathematics teacher at the Hudson School, and their four children, John, Christian, Rebecca, and Rachel, who attend St. Francis Academy in Union City. Jack and family are parishioners at Sts. Peter and Paul in Hoboken.

From the first day of classes at Xavier High School in 1847, there was a focus on “devotion to duty and learning”, and almost from the beginning, Xavier was perceived as a school which strove to fulfill the educational needs of the sons from immigrant families. This reputation included an emphasis on offering each student a quality education, one that would serve as a foundation and as an opportunity for success in life. Today, Xavier pursues this same course, performing the same role to immigrant families, but now to those from families from origins elsewhere on the globe and often with different native languages.

Xavier High School endeavors to prepare students for the 21st century who will be persons of competence, conscience, and compassion. As a Catholic, Jesuit, college preparatory school for young men, Xavier accomplishes this goal in the context of a multicultural, urban community dedicated to learning, faith, and service. Xavier is chartered and registered by The Regents of the University of the State of New York, the New York State Department of Education, and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

HUMC ER Opened Yesterday

I know this was yesterday's news but the Hoboken Unoversity Medical Center is now open for business as of yesterday. Here is their official press release with one comment from me on the ribbon cutting photo:

Hoboken University Medical Center
unveils state-of-the art Emergency Department
New 17,000-square foot facility delivers faster, better care to Hudson area patients

Will this be Mayor Roberts last ribbon cutting ceremony before he leaves office July 1st?

HOBOKEN, NJ, June 16, 2009 — Hoboken University Medical Center unveiled its state-of-the-art Emergency Department yesterday and began treating patients in the new ER at 4 a.m. this morning. ER Lead Tech Troy Griffiths, M.I,C.P., welcomed the ER’s first patient, Hoboken resident Anmahian Hrant.

“Patients can expect a new standard in emergency care with a facility that is not only larger, but also better and faster in that we’re also the first hospital in the nation to adopt some cutting-edge clinical practices,” said Hoboken UMC CEO Spiros Hatiras who was also on hand to greet patients. “The area’s most advanced Emergency Department is now in Hoboken.”

Located at the new entrance at Fourth Street and Willow Avenue, the 17,000-square foot facility features at total of 30 new treatment rooms including four pediatric treatment rooms, dedicated areas for women’s services, orthopedics and mental health, as well as two trauma rooms for more seriously injured patients. “This Emergency Department is unique because it was designed with the input of doctors, nurses and ER Techs — the people who actually work in the ER,” said Director of Emergency Services George Saffran M.D. “We’ve been able to perfect the layout and function of the space which allows us to streamline the admitting process, reduce waiting times and improve our staff’s ability to care for patients.”

Hospital officials also expect to see a rise in patient admissions once the new Emergency Department opens. Hoboken UMC treats 32,000 emergency patients annually and now has the capacity to serve 70,000.
