HUMC ER Opened Yesterday

I know this was yesterday's news but the Hoboken Unoversity Medical Center is now open for business as of yesterday. Here is their official press release with one comment from me on the ribbon cutting photo:

Hoboken University Medical Center
unveils state-of-the art Emergency Department
New 17,000-square foot facility delivers faster, better care to Hudson area patients

Will this be Mayor Roberts last ribbon cutting ceremony before he leaves office July 1st?

HOBOKEN, NJ, June 16, 2009 — Hoboken University Medical Center unveiled its state-of-the-art Emergency Department yesterday and began treating patients in the new ER at 4 a.m. this morning. ER Lead Tech Troy Griffiths, M.I,C.P., welcomed the ER’s first patient, Hoboken resident Anmahian Hrant.

“Patients can expect a new standard in emergency care with a facility that is not only larger, but also better and faster in that we’re also the first hospital in the nation to adopt some cutting-edge clinical practices,” said Hoboken UMC CEO Spiros Hatiras who was also on hand to greet patients. “The area’s most advanced Emergency Department is now in Hoboken.”

Located at the new entrance at Fourth Street and Willow Avenue, the 17,000-square foot facility features at total of 30 new treatment rooms including four pediatric treatment rooms, dedicated areas for women’s services, orthopedics and mental health, as well as two trauma rooms for more seriously injured patients. “This Emergency Department is unique because it was designed with the input of doctors, nurses and ER Techs — the people who actually work in the ER,” said Director of Emergency Services George Saffran M.D. “We’ve been able to perfect the layout and function of the space which allows us to streamline the admitting process, reduce waiting times and improve our staff’s ability to care for patients.”

Hospital officials also expect to see a rise in patient admissions once the new Emergency Department opens. Hoboken UMC treats 32,000 emergency patients annually and now has the capacity to serve 70,000.
