Letter to Parents from Peter Carter Interim Hoboken Superintendent of Schools

Here is a letter from 2/1/2010 to parents of Hoboken Schools from Peter Carter Interim Superintendent. Two key potential hires are the the selection of the new Superintendent and the High School Principal that could be acted on in tomorrow's meeting in closed session. It has been reported that the new Superintendent that has been selected is Fank Romano who is on record stating he is in contract negotiations according to the Hoboken Reporter article here.

Peter Carter's letter.....

Dear Parents and Guardians,

What a month of January!

We are of course still wheeling as a nation and a world at the devastation and death caused by the earthquake in Haiti. Hoboken has come forth in many ways to assist, including the High School Student Council who have launched their own fund raising efforts, which may be supported by student activity funds once raised for “emergency student aid.” Our Jersey Journal several weeks ago did not report that the funds came from the senior class account, but unfortunately the article may have been interpreted that way by some. All is fine now, and we commend the seniors for their leadership and compassion. The staff, the drama club, and others have also stepped up to the plate in help a country which has lost more than 100,000 of its human beings who resided there.

Our preschool/kindergarten registration will begin the week of February 22nd. Please look at our website for the specifics. We have hopefully planned a much better system than has been used in the past, but we need YOU, the parents to tell all with 3,4, and 5 year old offspring to come to the Brandt School Cafeteria (9th and Garden) to register their children coming to school for the first time. We have also strategically placed posters throughout the city with all the specifics of the registration process.

Our current high school principal has resigned, and we are in the process of hopefully hiring a new experienced proven professional to fill that slot on a permanent basis. The board shall be interviewing my nominee on Tuesday, and action could occur as soon as the next regular meeting of the board on February 9th. There may be a little gap in time due the sixty day phenomenon for both the outgoing and incoming principal. We shall provide temporary administrative coverage. We of course thank our current principal for her service to the youth of Hoboken, and wish her well in her future endeavors.

Oh, speaking of new administrators, the Board of Education will conclude its current search process for a Superintendent at a special closed session meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) evening. A finalist may or may not emerge as a result of the Board’s deliberations. Keep your eye on the website with up to the minute results!

Please watch the website too for the announcement of the date of our meeting with the parents of our current seventh and eighth graders. Thursday, February 18th, or Wednesday, the 24th are on the “Save the Date” radar for this very important meeting for the 7th and 8th grade parents. We shall have already met with the appropriate teachers by that time. The Assistant Superintendent is putting the finishing touches on the unveiling of the 2010-2011 program.

Have you heard that your administrative team has presented an FY ’11 budget which keeps your taxes FLAT! Hopefully, State Aid will remain the same, too, because the administrative proposal is based upon the current state aid number(s). I trust you join us in that optimism. Happy Valentine’s Day, everybody!

Sincerely yours,
Peter E. Carter
