Hoboken Memorial Day Parade Honors only living Medal of Honor recipient in Hudson County

HONORED WWII MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT

Location: Washington Street from City Hall to 10th Street by the Elks Club


The “Medal of Honor” is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States Government. It is bestowed on members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguish themselves “conspicuously by gallantry at the risk of his or her life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States.”

During World War II 16 Million US Servicemen and women served their country but only 500 were awarded the “Medal of Honor.”

Hoboken is proud to recognize the only living “Medal of Honor” recipient from Hudson County, Mr. Nicholas Oresko. Mr. Nicholas Oresko entered the US Army in 1943 from is home town of Bayonne, New Jersey. He was awarded the “Medal of Honor” for his heroic actions on January 23rd, 1945 near the town of Tettington, Germany. ◦
