Press Release from Ryn Melberg on Economic Development

RYN MELBERG WILL ESTABLISH
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT – NOT REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT

Hoboken, N.J. – April 1, 2009 – Ryn Melberg, Candidate for Mayor of Hoboken, discussed today’s city council agenda which revisits several proposed real estate development project.

“Hoboken cannot afford politics as usual, which has been confusing real estate development for economic development,” she said. “When I am mayor I will assure that every development project is tied to a strategic economic goal for the city, that there is a total cost analysis, and an environmental impact study for every project.”

In further discussion she explained that some real estate projects have cost the city more to support then they bring in revenues whether through property taxes or payments in lieu of taxes (PILOTs).

“When a development costs more to support than it provides in revenue, it is the people who pick up the tab,” she said. “That’s why people are saying that they can’t afford politics are usual; why they are saying they can’t afford another politician as mayor. That’s why I am asking them to hire me as their financial manager mayor.”

An experienced financial manager for more than 15 years, Ms. Melberg has led large-scale business transformations and consolidations at leading companies, including American Express, JP Morgan Chase and Credit Suisse. She has the skills, experience, judgment and compassion to get Hoboken’s financial house in order.

It’s time to take the business of our city seriously. It’s time to Hire Ryn Melberg for Mayor. Hoboken is in the worst financial shape in twenty years. We have allowed the current Mayor and City Council to spend far more money than we have, resulting in devastating deficits and a State takeover of our finances and budget. Because of this, the state finance board has raised our taxes 47% this year. And, unless we do something now, they will go up again.
Meanwhile, people are afraid of losing their homes, others are struggling to keep their businesses and our infrastructure is crumbling.

With our current international recession, we cannot expect a bailout from the Federal or State government. We have to develop new sources of income and streamline our government so it is workable and affordable. This year, we have to hire a Mayor who will get our economic house in order while protecting our neighbors – seniors, working families and locally-owned businesses.
There is only one candidate in this race who has the financial management skills and experience to do this job. That candidate is Ryn Melberg.
