Here is a press release from Hoboken Revolt regarding this weekends upcoming voter motivation drive to get out the vote:
Community Action Groups Take to the Street to Motivate the Vote
Volunteers Needed for Voter Motivation Drive
Two local activists groups are joining forces to prompt higher voter turnout in the upcoming spring elections in Hoboken. On Saturday, April 4th, Hoboken Revolt and Lower Hoboken Taxes will set up stations along Washington Street and elsewhere around town, from 12 PM to 4 PM, in their first Voter Motivation Drive, urging people to take a role in the town’s future by casting a vote. Members of both groups will provide information on voting schedules and the voting process for both the Board of Education and mayoral/council elections.
“Our intent it to inspire residents- property owners and renters alike - to unleash the power of their vote” says Scott Delea, a spokesperson for Hoboken Revolt. “Educating them about the voting process is one way to do that.” Information about the elections, polling stations, absentee balloting and registration (for the mayoral election) will be available at the stations. Anyone who doubts the power of a few votes need only walk along Hoboken’s waterfront.
Twelve votes was all it took to put parks and promenades there instead of a thirty-three story 1.1 million square foot corporate center, unquestionably resulting in a monumental benefit for the entire citizenry of the town. Now, at another critical point in the town’s history, the event sponsors want residents again to participate in making Hoboken a better place to live.
Hoboken Revolt and Lower Hoboken Taxes are urging citizens to participate equally in both elections. Typically, the mayoral election draws at least three times as many voters as the BoE election, even while the school system accounts for more than thirty per cent of the budget. Also, worth considering is the positive impact an improved education system will have on real estate values and the overall quality of life in Hoboken.
Hoboken Revolt and Lower Hoboken Taxes formed in response to the massive tax hike exacted on property owners last winter. The nonpartisan groups are committed to positive change in the community. “Voting is one positive step that can have a real long-term result,” adds Delea.
