Classical Music Event This Weekend! Some of my readers might not know this but I am a classical music aficionado and love a good Bach, Beethoven or Chopin piece just as much as the latest Justin Timberlake song (ok kidding a little on that one). As some say, music can calm the savage beast and that is needed in this town given all the politicking going on as seen by recent comments on this site. What makes this stand out is that Danielle Farina is a violist and not a violinist. Violinists enjoy a much greater solo repertoire than violists so this should be a treat for those who appreciate the classics (not Frank Sinatra).

Violist Danielle Farina enjoys a varied career as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral musician, teacher, and recording artist in both the classical and pop genres. As a soloist, Ms. Farina recently recorded Jon Bauman's Viola Concerto with the Moravian Philharmonic, Andy Teirstein's Viola Concerto with the Kiev Philharmonic and premiered Peter Schickele's Viola Concerto with the Pasadena Symphony. She was a member of the Lark Quartet, touring extensively in North America, Europe, and Scandinavia performing at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institution, Schleswig Holstein Festival, and the International Istanbul Music Festival. While with the Lark, Ms. Farina recorded Aaron Kernis' string quartets, music of Amy Beach, and music of Giovanni Sollima. Currently a member of the Elements Quartet, she has participated in the Tibor Varga Festival in Budapest, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, been in residence at Utah Valley State College, and premiered "Snaphots", a project commissioning dozens of composers from Regina Carter to Angelo Badalamenti, to John Corigliano and many more. She performs with a number of ensembles in the New York area, among them, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Lukes, Concertante and Music From Copland House with whom she recorded music of John Musto. As an orchestral musician, Ms. Farina has served as principal violist of the Brooklyn Philharmonic and is currently the assistant principal violist of The Eastern Festival Orchestra. An active teacher, she is now on the faculty of the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division and The Eastern Music Festival. In addition to recording classical music, Ms. Farina also records for feature film soundtracks and well as pop albums. A graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music, Ms. Farina has studied with Karen Tuttle, Joseph dePasqaule, Stephen Werczynski, and Byrnina Socolofsky.

My Comment: To the best of my knowledge she is not related to Jimmy Farina City Clerk. I plan on attending this event as a fellow violist myself. Events like this are proof Hoboken has some very good cultural events. ◦

A Tale of Two Websites - On the Kids First Celebration Incident

In the news today is a story about a brew-ha-ha between Micheal Lenz, Tony Soares, and Ravi Bhalla in the Dawn Zimmer Camp vs. Ines Garcia-Keim and Jake Stuiver who are on Beth Mason's campaign that occurred at the Kids First Campaign Celebration at Maxwell's on Tuesday night. What is really a shame in this is that the real story is that individuals supporting different candidates for Mayor got together and supported the best ticket for Hoboken's Schools. Of course it goes without saying that Dawn's campaign lended out its organization to help get out the vote but the message was all from Kids First. Here is the story from two different story tellers. I ask you the reader to figure out which account is fairer after reviewing both accounts:

Reader Question: Which do you think is more balanced as stories go: The Hoboken Reporter or that other website with the silly piss myself drunk yellow colors and flashy ads all over the place, and partially ghost written by unspecified politicos with a personal agenda despite claims to the contrary, to top it all off?

My Take:
I was at the party but was outside when the incident took place. I saw Ines and Jake leaving visibly upset as they walked outside. Other than that I can't comment on what actually transpired, just the aftermath. The aftermath is best described by me being outside and listening to Jake Stuiver who I don't know well, rattle on about this on and on for well over 2o minutes. He kept emphasizing to Tim Carol on how this incident should be a news story.

Did Jake actually expect to get the red carpet treatment when he walked in? After all he is Beth Mason's campaign manager and her campaign did not give its endorsement and had at least one member of its slate working it for Pupie in the Applied buildings. The smarter play from Mr. Lenz would have been to let things be that night but he felt compelled to speak his mind given what he believed to be misrepresentations about himself and Dawn's campaign. In no way am I defending Micheal Lenz's actions but any of those who actually volunteered and supported Kids First were made more than welcome by him and Tony regardless of who they supported for Mayor with Ines and Jake as the noted exceptions. Ideally, it would have been best for both campaigns if this little tiff never happened. Camp Peter Cammarano must be loving this one. I for one did not find it newsworthy until all the clap-trap started on the "Yellow Website of Malcontents with Purple ads Preferentially Placed". Despite whatever your opinion Mr. Lenz's conduct, this story is overblown and out of proportion by Mr. Stuiver. Campaigns always bring out such passion in people and this story should not detract from a great win for Hoboken Schools.

If Jake and Ines truly did support Kids First as they say it would have helped if they gave a personal endorsement, challenged, walked the street, or a letter to the editor but that would have been a break in campaign discipline. Ines stated she donated and I do take her at her word given her support over the years to progressive educational causes. I do find it hard to believe that the two of them seem to not understand how upset many progressive voters were at Beth's decision to sit this one out especially after her endorsing Maureen Sullivan last year. It was certainly Beth's right to do whatever and it was calculated to maximize votes. With such calculating there is always fallout and Beth's decision to sit it out on the BOE election will be evaluated in the coming weeks as to what effect it will have on her campaign just as Mr. Lenz's behavior.

This wasn't about Dawn vs. Beth it was about the best slate to run the BOE. Go Kids First and let us move beyond the pettiness of personalities to the real issues at hand.

Charity Success Story - Ben and Jerry's Raises $2,000

People lined up down Washington Street yesterday to enjoy free ice cream and music at National Free Cone Day. Pierre and Sibel, owners of the Hoboken Ben and Jerry's franchise generously designated The Jubilee Center of Hoboken as Charity of the Day. The Center which provides a safe haven for kids in Hoboken's public housing to do school work and get a hot meal, was able to raise $2000 as folks danced and ate delicious ice cream!

This is a nice fundraising sucess story as the Jubilee Center is an important charitible organization for the children of Hoboken that need help the most.

Editorial - Congratulations Kid's First and all those Who Helped

I would like to congratulate Kids First on a hard fought victory for the betterment of Education in Hoboken. The ticket was a strong ticket, it had the right message, it was the right time, and it motivated enough voters to get the win.

Thanks should also go to Dawn Zimmer's campaign organization who worked hard to keep things organized and coordinated. Theresa and her ticket had asked her for help and Dawn and her team gave it willingly to help the cause. Dawn wasn't the only candidate Kids first asked for help from but the only Mayoral Candidate that formally stepped up and openly supported this great ticket. Thank you Dawn, Peter Cunningham, and Chris Carbine as well as the entire Zimmer Slate of Ravi Bhalla, Carol Marsh and David Mello!

I would also like to thank those supporters of Beth Mason who also independently supported Kids first because your conscience dictated so. Your efforts as challengers and support too helped make the difference and I mean that sincerely. By giving your support you put principle over politics and that earns my respect.

I worked as a challenger and enjoyed the day as I was in the uptown firehouse at 14th Street and got to meet some of the poll workers as well as many of the fireman that protect our town. The highlight of my day was the Hoboken Dancer was back at his usual post around 8PM (14th and Washington). At the time I did not now the outcome of the election but I now look back at Chewy's well choreographed routines as being harbinger of the good result.

I look forward to seeing this new team in action for constructive change for Hoboken's Schools. Thanks again for all those who voted. ◦

A community meeting is scheduled on Wednesday April 22nd for the Northwest Redevelopment area. This is being hosted to get ideas from the community as to best how to aproach this parcel of land. Here is the press release:
