P.B.A. President Attacks Zimmer’s Credibility
on Public Safety Cuts
A Statement from Vince Lombardi, President of Hoboken P.B.A.
“Yesterday Mayor Zimmer issued another statement claiming that she is ‘working to finalize a redeployment plan to ensure that there is no reduction in the number of officers patrolling our streets’ regarding her plan to slash 37 jobs from the Hoboken Police Department. I was appalled and disgusted to read this.
The Mayor’s plan will have a devastating impact on the City of Hoboken. For her to claim that she can cut 37 police jobs and have no impact on manpower and presence is an outrageous statement and an outright lie. You cannot fire 18 police officers and demote 19 others without jeopardizing the safety of the people of Hoboken and dramatically decreasing the department’s capabilities.
The Mayor’s plan is ridiculous in light of the city’s recently discovered $20 million budget surplus. She has less credibility talking about the public’s safety in Hoboken than George W. Bush had in talking about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
Mayor Zimmer is now ‘inviting the police unions to join and have a voice in these discussions’ in a meeting at her office on Monday. We have no intention of cooperating with this obvious media publicity stunt. We will not allow our membership to be abused in this egregious manner. Any further discussion of the city’s layoff plan is absurd and we will not be a part of this nonsense.
We again call upon Mayor Zimmer and the city council to rescind their layoff plan and stop playing politics with the safety of the City of Hoboken.”

1) Treat your readers like intelligent people.
Saying 37 jobs are being "cut" is disingenuous. People know what's happening. Don't insult them or pray they don't know the facts.
Likewise it is dishonest to refer to "layoffs" as being "fired". There is a world of difference in the rights and public and employer perception of the 18 officers.
By fudging both the terms and the extent of the reduction-in-force, you suggest that the facts don't speak for themselves and need to be embellished. Is this your feeling, master Lombardi? If so, please rewrite your composition accordingly.
And there's that "$20million surplus" again. If only. Do you see how this pattern of fact abuse actually hurts your cause more than it helps, master Lombardi?
2) Emotional language only conveys that you are emotional, especially if claims are not supported.
"Appalled", "disgusted", "devastating", "egregious". Strong words, but how do you demonstrate your emotional conclusions so that your reader may reach the same conclusions? Let's just take "devastating".
It's completely unexplained - unless one credits your miss-characterization of 37 cuts as 'proof' of devastation. As an LE professional, master Lombardi, you should have the authority to do more than wave your arms around and bleat that the sky is falling. But you don't. And you play fast and loose with the few facts you present. Most disappointing, master Lombardi. Most disappointing.
3) Simply insulting the person across the table is a dangerous game.
The Bush/WMD crack may have felt irresistible. But it just sits there as an insult with no frame of reference. You must learn to avoid wisecracks like these unless you can tie them to your context some how. Otherwise all you convey is contempt. And that is not the purpose of your composition. At least one hopes that isn't the purpose.
Please make these corrections and resubmit your composition.
And a word of caution. If you're planning to throw down the gauntlet, make sure you actually have a gauntlet to throw. Do you think it's wise to refer to "playing politics" and then hire the Darth Vader of Hudson political consulting to carry on the battle for you? Sloppy work, master Lombardi. More is expected.

Excuse me, dear. Throwing up in my mouth a little. There, that's better.
You know, Monsignor was just saying the other day how nice it would be to have a taller altar boy for those harder to reach candles... If you come by the rectory today, I'm sure we can have your cassock fitted by Sunday.
And now, Sister must go to confession for all the awful images that sprang to mind when I said you children are our future....
Have a heavenly day, master Giganticus. I do so love a Latin surname..

Coming out of the gate with veiled attacks poking fun at me indicate that an examination of your faith is probably in order. Not very divine behavior for a nun. Have a nice day. Next time I see you ringing that bell I will be more than happy to put the nickel in the drum for the Salvation Army.
Salvation Army,
Salvation Army,
Put a nickel in the drum,
save another drunken bum.

-It's fact-based rather than purely emotional.
-Most of the emotional language is gone (except for 'total gridlock').
-Wayward insults without context have been eliminated.
