Franz Paetzold still gathering petitions for his 2nd Ward run. |
- Franz still intends to run and will not run a campaign that takes outside contributions.
- The Hoboken Journal posters "Campaign Manager" and "Incinerous" are not in any way affiliated with his campaign.
- He did acknowledge that he is acquainted with Paul Lichtstein when the two met at Vassar in the 90s.
- He did acknowledge this is the first time he has run for office.
- He is not convinced that Tom Greaney is the candidate that will beat Beth Mason. He thinks he has a chance of winning the race.
- As of this morning, Franz is still not up on the NJ Elections website as filing. He is not the only candidate that hasn't filed their 2011 campaign forms. For reference Mike Russo, Beth Mason and Terry Castellano still have not either for 2011.

Hoboken 2011 Election filers as of 3-6-2011 |
My comment and assessment: I do believe that Franz is sincere in his efforts to run a self-funded campaign. Maybe most of the readers here feel that he doesn't have much of a shot. He does not have the name recognition of Beth Mason but that shouldn't stop some one from trying to get involved in local politics. The Hoboken Journal stands by a person's right to run for political office. While I support Tom Greaney as a candidate, it will be up to Tom to meet as many people as possible and get the support regardless of how many other candidates throw their hat in the ring. Readers: Share your thoughts in the comments below.
Update 3/1/2011: Due to comment volume and discussion interest this post has been bumped up.
Orginal Post 2/20/2011:
Hoboken Journal Exclusive- Franz Paetzold to
run in the 2nd Ward

He has not filed his NJ ELECs as of today but is working to get his required signatures. He joins incumbent Beth Mason and challenger Tom Greaney. His inclusion in the race should he get his petitions in on time make it a three way race and most likely guarantee a runoff in June.
2nd Ward Candidate Franz Paetzold

I'll just say this. Ms Mason has a lot of $$ and isn't shy about spending it. For anything. When the petitions come in they should be scanned for concentrations of Mason loyalists.

We all should look forward to seeing Mr.Paetzold's platform and ideas. More participation is the key to preventing a Russo or Roberts from ever being elected again.

This maneuver by Mason would not be viable if Hoboken had "instant runoffs" which are used in many municipalities. It's high time Hoboken had them too so we can stop the endless cycle of campaigning and get our elected officials back to their sworn duties sooner.

One must remember that Mrs. Mason has been losing her race with the truth votes over the last few elections. Her handlers attempts to drastic re-branding of her image is proof that even they understand Mrs. Mason is unliked by the vast majority of Second Ward voters.

Find out who is on the council. There's no one named Bhalia.
Look up libel in the dictionary.

"A friend of mine picked up a petition to run against Mason, he gets a call from that sleazeball Bhalia asking him to withdraw his petition because he dosen’t want votes being taken away from the candidate Bhalia and Zimmer put up. Then he tells him that as a payback Bhalia will put him on the ballot when he runs for mayor. This guy Bhalia is such a scum of the earth he needs to go NOW….."
Bhalia told Franz that he's running for mayor and will put him on the ticket? This Bhalia is quite a fool, no? Announced he was running for mayor and gave up a council seat on a quick phone call?
You did the right thing peddling it on 411. They eat that sh!t up. Bon appetit.

Tell us about your friend, Franz, Joey.
What kind of change is he bringing?
What does he see as Mason's specific failures, since she is the incumbent?
What doesn't he like about Greaney, about whom not a lot is known?
What are Franz's hot-button issues?
Surely you didn't just log on here to call potential voters dumbasses? Don't they have a section on that in the Campaign Manager Manual?

Frankly these attacks on Mr.Paetzold and the person purporting to be his camaign manger reflect poorly on this community. Mr.Paetzold has the abosulte right to run and to voice his opinions when running. Mr.Paetzold should be welcomed to the fight to remove Beth Mason and to improve Hoboken. If we can't do that then let's at least be respectful when a first time candidate is trying to put together a platform.

I've lived in Hoboken 24yrs and never heard of Tom Greaney. We don't live under a rock; friends of ours are friends with politico's, but we don't talk politics much with our friends, and are typical 'busy' people not that focused on civic life. Not to say that's the way to be, but more activist types should keep in mind how steeply name recognition falls off once you get below fame/infamy like Zimmer/Mason, especially among new newcomer voters. Some of them will vote for Paetzold because he, like they is younger than Greaney, if Greaney's profile isn't raised a lot. A lot will vote for Mason if she's still the only one they've really heard of.
Zimmer's movement is going to have a do a good job of old fashioned campaigning behind a single slate of candidates in order to win back that council majority. I support them but it's still to be proven to me they have the political skill to make real change in this city; they slipped up with Lenz, now a bigger test is coming up.

I spoke with Mr. Paetzold last Saturday at the Hudson Tavern. Let me share what I learned:
He claims to not be connected with any local town politician. He is also adamant that he will not accept help or donations from people or entities outside of the 2nd Ward. In his words he wants to run a clean and pure campaign that is devoid of outside interests.
The younger voters do seem to like him. When I spoke with him there were a couple of people he introduced me to who were in their young 30’s who are definitely going to vote for him. It also looks like he feels at home communicating with this segment of the town population.
He told me his most important theme is Hoboken First. I asked him what that meant and he responded that if elected he will only vote in a way that places the needs of the city first. This means he could care less about political allegiances. This also means that if this guy actually gets elected (a long shot) the council composition could look something like 4 – 4- 1.

The problem for Greaney and Mason is that Paetzold’s Hoboken First position gives him the moral upper hand. Voters know that Greaney and Mason are going to vote according to political lines; however, Paetzold is going to vote for what he believes is best for Hoboken.
He said he has tremendous admiration for Councilman Bhalla and that anyone who says otherwise does not represent him. Unfortunately he also respects Beth Mason. He has not met Tom Greaney. He also said that his supporters have also not heard of Tom Greaney.
Apparently Paetzold and Lichtenstein went to Vassar College together back in the 90’s. He and Paul have remained distant friends since that time. (I checked this out and yes both did attend Vassar College at the same time). I am still suspicious of this friendship and I look forward to learning about what others can find.

I signed his petition originally to get him off guard and learn more about him. I wanted to get some good dirt. In retrospect I am somewhat ashamed of my actions. There is something good about this guy; something this town has not seen in awhile and I am starting to wonder. He may still have a lot to learn about Hoboken politics. But is that such a bad thing?
Originally I planned on voting for Mr. Greaney because Mason has to go. But folks –I am not so sure anymore. Greaney is sitting on his but…at least this guy is out there shaking hands with people. I am waiting for Franz to deliver a platform. He is still new and looks like he is trying to build one. I’d like to hear more from him.

Also- - rumor has it that people in the Mason camp are keeping a wary eye on Mr. Paetzold. They are even preparing for the possibility that Paetzold will take the role of lead challenger. His name has already made it onto their discussion tables. They are afraid that if his campaign gets and serious traction that he may wind up posing the larger threat because of his political purity, and appeal to young voters and voters who want change. Right now as we speak they are looking into who he is and preparing for ways to attack him. This shows how desperate Mason has become – to begin plotting the destruction of a political new comer who has not even officially gotten onto the ballot yet.
One word of caution – people love baby seals and they hate anyone who tries to club a baby seal to death.

Thank you for your submission for our assignment "Fifth Grade Fantasy Hoboken 2nd Ward Election Docu-drama". Unfortunately, the "voice" used in the piece is illogical and seems to completely not understand some things, such as how to enter into a plausible candidacy, yet seems to understand other things completely, such as campaign strategy. Moreover, it reads as a sketchy take of what, say, the Mason campaign, would have us think about what a mysterious, "wet-behind-the-ears Boy Scout-like" challenger to a key segment of reform's voting block would conveniently do, whose faceless come-lately candidacy comes from nowhere and serendipitously hits a "sweet spot" of the electorate. To be fair, we will consider it, for use lets say, in an article in "Highlights" magazine, so we will keep your submission in mind, but for use we will have to improve it's credibility greatly. However, you will share only partially, not fully, in a writing credit, since your creative work is much too derivative of the recently penned 4th Ward Occhipinti campaign.
Unfortunately, I am also hereby issuing a warning notice that you are failing our class, since I told you repeatedly your constant talking on your cell phone to political operatives during the creative writing class period would affect your comprehension, and this submission, being "D-" work, bears that out.
I await the day you think our class assignments and Hoboken's elections are not a joke to be rushed through half-heartedly at the last minute, portrayed with an implausible cock-and-bull cliche sensibility. In the meanwhile, please print out your four blog entries and have them signed by a parent.
