When I first heard the vuvuzela at an international soccer match I didn't know what to make of it. I figured some deranged beekeeper /terrorist had let a bunch of the little buzzing critters loose inside the stadium. The loud and initially annoying horn has been part of the buzz around the FIFA 2010 World Cup not to mention dramatic finishes and some pretty blatant blown calls. Over time the studios have figured out how to filter out much of the sound so that is not as prominent and trained ear can do the rest to block out the background noise.
The iphone has gotten into the act and there are several vuvuzela phones in the iphone app store. here is a demo of one such app the "Virtual Vuvuzela" that can start out being mildly amusing and then get pretty annoying. As this demo shows, the noise is quite loud.
