Stop The Zimmer Layoffs Glossy Mailer - Analysis

The PBA sent out a very expensive flier over the weekend to what appears to be all Hoboken residents on stopping the Zimmer Police Layoffs. Here are the screen shots of the flier and my commentary on the assertions it makes.....

True- Several of her staff got large raises but they were below market value to begin with. Zimmer's Administration budget will be at least 20% lower than under Roberts/Cammarano for that department. The overall budget for that department is what reallly counts and is not being mentioned here. I wonder why? Zimmer is cutting the City Hall employees as well and this is not about just the police force.

Actually 18 jobs are proposed to be eliminated not 37. The surplus that can be used is $12 million of which $2 million is going to go back to taxpayers. A remaining surplus of $10 million will allow Hoboken to borrow at lower rates and help us for unexpected expenses that come up. Low surpluses mean lower credit ratings for Municipalities: See story on NJ.com that has this quote: "Last year the financial service downgraded Rahway’s bond rating in Union County, citing a lower budget surplus than the previous year."

If Hoboken with a police force of about 160 officers can only have patrol officers on duty at any one time that is not a staffing problem but a scheduling and organization problem. The problem can be addressed with more efficiency of assignments. Hoboken is all about location first and then safety and many other factors as a concern as to why it is such a desirable place to live.

Dawn Zimmer's board appointments do involve people who have contributed to her campaign. These have been to boards of non-paying positions where concerned citizens participate without remuneration. These appointments are unlike Mayor Roberts politically motivated appointment of John Correa to the HPU who was previously banned from the exchange, poorly ran the Parking Utility and is now charged with theft of $600,000 from the HPU. This is a true example of a patronage appointment and not Zimmer's where some concerned citizen who is volunteering their time and expertise to an unpaid position.

The term patronage is being used most disingenously by master of Propaganda Paul Swibinski who according to Hudson County political critic Bill Brennan pulls in over $300K a year in public contracts. Paul sucks on the patronage tit for an extravagant living like some deranged vampire on HBO's series True Blood so I find it ironic to say the least to see his firm use that term in this latest political swipe at the Mayor. How do you like that for propoganda Paul? How much is your campaign costing the PBA, Paul? Why does Vince Lombardi refuse to comment on how much this is costing the PBA? I support the right for the Police Union to protest but I think at some point a line could be crossed. Let us all hope it does not come to that.
