Community Meeting on Newark Street Safety Improvements Tonight

REMINDER: MAYOR ZIMMER TO HOLD COMMUNITY MEETING ON NEWARK STREET SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS TONIGHT

Mayor Dawn Zimmer and Transportation and Parking Director Ian Sacs will hold a community meeting this evening, July 19 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Multi-Service Center, 124 Grand Street, to involve residents in the process of improving safety along Newark Street.

This is part of the Administration’s efforts to involve the community’s ideas and creativity at the beginning, rather than the end, of the design process.

The City of Hoboken has $240,000 in federal funding for improving safety along Newark Street between River Street and Washington Street. The funding, which was secured by Senator Robert Menendez, was awarded in 2009, and due to the time-sensitive nature of the funds, community input is critical to moving forward with the project.

Additional public meetings are also scheduled to discuss other projects.

On Tuesday, August 3rd from 4:30 to 7:30 pm, Mayor Zimmer, Director Sacs, and consultants from The RBA Group will host a "Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan Public Visioning Meeting."

On Tuesday, August 17th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, Mayor Zimmer and Director Sacs will host an "Observer Highway Safety Re-Design Community Workshop."

"Through these initiatives, we have the opportunity to make exciting improvements to our City that will ease congestion and traffic problems while making our streets more inviting and safer for pedestrians and cyclists," said Mayor Zimmer. "Community feedback is critical to the success of these projects, so I urge residents to come out and provide their input."

The Hoboken Zoning Board will be hearing a request for variances for a 350-unit condo building at 38 Jackson Street ( Jackson and Newark)

Will granting these variances put an end to any hope of open-space in the southwest ?

Anyone who has tried to drive by that corner knows what a nightmare it is already adding a build only that size is only going to make it worse.

How many stories is that? 15? That is one big building.

What do we get in exchange for this variance? If they actually give us something real (and not some stupid museum or a couple of retail spaces on the ground floor) I am not going to immediately be opposed to such a building. But I want real tangible givebacks, big givebacks, givebacks I am 99% certain no developer will give us. I want givebacks like the ones Weehawken got when they got that nice park complex on the waterfront.. Otherwise let them stick w/ the current zoning and lose their shirts on their investment.

At about Jeff, Newark St becomes Newark Ave. People entering Hoboken from Jersey Ave and wishing to go to the west side of town - or just avoid the commuter nexus altogether - attempt with ever-decreasing hope to make a left from Newark Ave onto Jackson. They have the milliseconds between when the light changes at Monroe and the last car clears the Jax/Newark intersection to make their move. If you observe this intersection for any length of time, you realize that more and more of the turning cars are simply attempting to 'establish position' in front of the oncoming Newark traffic or flooring it to scoot through before their brief window closes.

This is not on its way to improving. Backing the cars up further down Jersey Ave is not a solution.

Is this being thought of, he inquired down a barrel...
Well attended meeting with a lot of good ideas. I like that the Zimmer administration has this type of open process seeking community input. Even a foe of this administration gave some good constructive ideas. Thanx to Ian Sacs, Brandy Forbes, Dave Mello and of course Mayor Zimmer for hosting this event.
