AUGUST 20 – ON THE WATERFRONT in Hoboken, NJ
“I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am.”
The single greatest actor in American film history, Marlon Brando, offers up one of his most delightfully tormented roles as ex-boxer Terry Malloy in ON THE WATERFRONT. Brando is at the height of his game here, offering up a naturalistic style of acting in an emotive and brutal performance.
ON THE WATERFRONT is a social commentary film, bringing to light the corruption, crime and immorality on the New Jersey docks. It’s one of the most alarming and politically revolutionary films of the 1950s to come out of Hollywood. It’s also one of the best made, from director Kazan and screenwriter Budd Schulberg to the performances of Brando in the lead and Karl Malden, Rod Steiger, and the ever-gorgeous ingénue Eva Marie Saint (in her feature film debut). Winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Writing, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Cinematography.
Where else can we show ON THE WATERFRONT than on the waterfront? We’re going to Hoboken New Jersey, where the film takes place, and watching the film on Pier A, just like real dock workers.
This screening will take place at Hoboken’s Pier A Park, overlooking the ocean and the beautiful New York City skyline.
The film is being shown in memory of screewriter Budd Schulberg. Budd was a friend of Hoboken and participated often in city events.
The Rolling Roadshow screening of ON THE WATERFRONT is co-sponsored by Mayor Dawn Zimmer & The City of Hoboken.
Please join us for a special pre-screening event at The Dubliner (cash bar) from 6:00 – 7:30 PM. The Dubliner is within walking distance to the screening location at Pier A.
