New Hoboken Phone Poll- Who is behind this?

Tim Carroll of PolitickerNJ.com wrote about a recent political phone poll in Hoboken and cited Tony Soares as the only poll responder on record. I can state that is no longer the case. Both Grafix Avenger (http://grafixavenger.blogspot.com/2010/09/ga-gets-push-polled.html) and Mile Square View (http://hobokenhorse.blogspot.com/2010/09/beth-mason-poll-revealed.html)  have a story on it and I finally was able to pick up the phone yesterday and respond to the poll. Below is my complete transcription of the poll in its entirety and that is my reason for breaking the story a bit late. Besides I still have to have a bit of a life. The poll was conducted by The New Jersey Opinion Research Center calling from 800-251-5850.

Hudson political consultant and Beth Mason supporter Tom Bertolli stated he thought it was a phony poll. Here is an excerpt from the Tim Carroll article:

“I think its six idiots sitting in a room trying are to antagonize people,” according to Bertolli, who represents, at times, Mason and Jersey City Councilman Steve Fulop.

“That’s why they called Tony Soares, because he’s got the biggest mouth in town,” he said. “But it’s Hoboken, you never know (who it is). Somebody’s always stirring the pot.”

Mason said she doesn’t have a poll in the field after first dodging the question based on lack of information.

But, she added, “I don’t really know sometimes when things go on,” considering she has several different consulting agencies in the mix.

My comment: True. Tony Soares may be quite vocal (i.e. have a big mouth) but Tom Bertoli is either a liar and not that informed of a source. Looks like Tony made the right call on this poll. Kudos to Soares!

Here is the Latest Hoboken Political Phone Poll transcribed:

Are you at least 18 years old and registered to vote?

Which party are you registered with?

What are the most important issues to you right now about Hoboken?
  • Taxes.
  • Budget.
  • Education.
  • Crime.
  • Corruption.
  • Traffic
  • Conjestion.
  • Over development.
Do you feel Hoboken is on the right direction? Agree, Strongly Agree, Disagree, or Strongly Disagree?

Rate your impression about each person or entity. Very favorable, Somewhat favorable,  Very unfavorable, or somewhat unfavorable:
  • Barack Obama
  • Mike Lenz
  • Mike Russo
  • Chris Christie
  • Carol Marsh
  • Brian Stack
  • Beth Mason
  • Dawn Zimmer
  • Bob Menendez
  • Anthony Romano
  • The Hoboken PBA
  • Tim Occhipinti
  • Tom DeGise
Rate Dawn Zimmer's job performance. Excellent, Good, Fair, or Poor?

Rate Ravi Bhalla's job performance.Excellent, Good, Fair, or Poor?

Rate Beth Mason's job performance.Excellent, Good, Fair, or Poor?

At this point how certain would you be to support Dawn Zimmer if she were to run again?

Who would you support for the next mayoral race? Dawn Zimmer or Carol Marsh?

Who would you support in the next Democratic Primary for Senate? Dawn Zimmer or Brian Stack?

Who would you support in the next Democratic Primary for Freeholder? Anthony Romano or Beth Mason?

Who would you support for the next County Executive: Beth Mason or Tom DeGise?

How is Mayor Zimmer doing so far on the following issues? Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor?
  • Holding Down Taxes
  • Crime
  • Open Honest Government
  • Increasing Open Space
  • Improving Quality of Life
If you were told the City had a $20 million surplus, how would you want it used?
  • To prevent police layoffs.
  • Put in a fund to avoid future tax increases.
  • Cut taxes now.
Dawn Zimmer recently announced she's cutting 18 police jobs while the city has a $20 million surplus. Do you think she should use the money to:

  • Layoff the 18 police officers.
  • Give the 18 police officers their jobs back.
Do you agree or disagree with the following statements?

  • Beth Mason cares about people like me.
  • Beth Mason is standing up for good government.
  • Dawn Zimmer cares about people like me.
  • When Dawn Zimmer became mayor she promised to cut taxes by 25%. Has she?
  • Dawn Zimmer is bringing all factions of Hoboken together.
  • Every incumbent that is not performing should be voted out.
Would you be more or less likely to vote for Dawn Zimmer again for mayor if you knew:

  • She was giving large raises to personal aides while she was laying off 18 police officers?
  • That recently Mayor Dawn Zimmer and her City Council pulled out of selling our municipal garage to a developer for $25 million and now the city's responsible for paying back the $15 million it borrowed against the garage and will lose $10 million that the City would have grossed from the sale?
Which of the following news outlets do you read regularly to get information on Hoboken and Hoboken politics?

  • The Hoboken Reporter
  • The Jersey Journal
  • Hoboken 411
  • The Hoboken Journal
  • Grafix Avenger
  • Mile Square View
How old are you?

How long have you lived in Hoboken?

What race are you?

Do you own or rent?

Do you watch City Council meetings on Channel 78?

That was the conclusion of the poll. Now according to Tim Carroll of PolitickerNJ.com Beth Mason and Beth Mason apologist and Hudson county political agitator Tom Bertoli claim there is no such poll done on her behalf. If not Beth Mason then who is funding this poll? It is clearly not some prank since quite a few people I know have been polled and the callback number yields a professionally recorded message. Polling is very expensive so any one curious would want to know is where is the money coming from?

In the spirit of push pulling I cam up with my own gem. This was based an a statement by a tax paying 2nd Ward resident who said they would vote for a spatula instead of Beth Mason. Remember online polls are for amusement only and not scientifically valid for predicting electoral outcomes. For your amusement only I present a Hoboken Journal exclusive poll:

The Hoboken Journal Spatula Push Poll:

Note: For those of you who don't like push polls, remember this is meant as a parody. Besides, at least a spatula is a useful  tool. Can't say the same about the other option. ◦
